Designing a Fashion Business: Plan & Create (Advanced Arbor Class)

This is an Advanced Arbor Class. This class has been designed for advanced junior high students and motivated early high school students who are ready for fast-paced content, increased rigor, and an extensive at-home component. Students who are unable or unwilling to complete at-home assignments will not find this class to be a good fit. Please see the Required Prior Knowledge/Skills and At-home Work descriptions for specific details. Out-of-grade level requests for students younger than 7th grade will not be considered for this class.

Prerequisite Class: Completion of Beginning Sewing and Intermediate Sewing at The Arbor. Students wishing to enroll without first taking Beginning and Intermediate Sewing at The Arbor, must have at least 2 years of sewing experience and receive teacher/office approval. Please reach out to registration@thearborlearningcommunity.com to request approval.

Required Reading Level: Students should be able to read 8th grade level sight words with ease. Students will be given step-by-step written instructions with corresponding images.

Required Writing Level: Students should be able to write sentences and paragraphs at 8th grade level with minimal assistance. This class will require students to write about their collection and product descriptions.

Required Materials: Students should bring their own basic school supplies. See list of supplies here.

Students will also need the following supplies for class:
-Tablet or Ipad or Laptop or similar device that can access the internet (internet access is provided).
-Access to camera on ipad, tablet, laptop, or phone
-Access to Google sites, Canva, and Etsy
-Keyboard and mouse is helpful but not necessary.

All other materials will be provided.

Description: Have you ever wanted to start a fashion business? This course is dedicated to all who are interested in starting their own fashion or creative business. Methods for developing a business include target market research, planning, and creating product concept designs through illustrations. In this course, students will also learn how to sell online and create a website with Google/Etsy.

Teacher feedback on skills learned and/or improved upon will be provided.

At-home Work is Optional: At-home work is optional and may be used to extend learning at home. Any at-home work should take up to 30 minutes per week* to complete or extend projects from class.
*Specified at-home work time is an approximation. Individual at-home work times will vary by student.

Spring 2025 Companion Class: Designing a Fashion Business: Launch & Create
The fall and spring must be registered for separately.

In the spring, we will create our products while launching our business and will require a sewing machine and sewing supplies.
